Utah State University's Bingham Entrepreneurship & Energy Research Center in Vernal, Utah, invites applications for a research position focused on energy and air quality. The successful applicant will work primarily to develop methods to capture, identify and quantify semivolatile oxidized mercury compounds in the ambient atmosphere, but will also engage in air quality and air emissions measurement campaigns to characterize air quality impacts of oil and gas development in Utah and elsewhere.

Responsibilities

(1) Develop methods to capture, identify, and quantify semivolatile oxidized mercury compounds from the ambient atmosphere
--Develop calibration systems, sampling apparatuses, and analytical tools that improve upon existing ability to accurately measure oxidized mercury compounds in ambient air
--Test and deploy these systems to determine the identity of naturally occurring oxidized mercury compounds
--Interact and collaborate with research partners at other institutions
--Develop and carry out laboratory and field safety procedures
--Analyze and present data, write reports and peer-reviewed articles

(2) Participate in air quality research to understand air quality impacts of oil and gas development
--Operate analytical instrumentation in the field and laboratory
--Work with a research team to carry out complex field campaigns
--Analyze and present data, write reports and peer-reviewed articles

Minimum Qualifications

--PhD or all but dissertation;
--Experience with GC/MS method development;
--Experience working independently and as research project lead;
--Strong written and verbal communication skills; and
--Strong team ethic and desire to be an integral part of our growing team.

Preferred Qualifications

--Experience with air quality instrumentation and data
--Experience with atmospheric mercury research

Work Environment

Office Environment: Employees are protected from weather conditions or contaminants, but not necessarily
occasional temperature changes.
Outdoor Environment: Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions.
Extreme Cold: Temperatures typically below 32 for more than an hour.
Extreme Heat: Temperatures above 100 for more than an hour.
Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving
vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals.
