The Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology of Heidelberg University, Division of Cardiovascular Physiology (Prof. Dr. Markus Hecker) offers a postdoctoral position to work on the differentiation of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes.
 

Description

Research: Stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes represent the new hope for heart failure patients, and modern research concepts focus on the development of novel treatment strategies for the diseased heart involving stem cell models and tissue engineering. A major challenge in this field is to achieve a cardiac phenotype in these newly generated cardiac cells close enough to resemble native cardiomyocytes in structure and function. We are interested in the molecular and subcellular processes that drive development of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes towards morphological and functional maturation. Project: The main topic of your research will focus on the investigation of structural and functional differentiation of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes in comparison with native cardiac cells with the purpose to identify the key mechanisms that drive cardiomyocyte maturation towards an adult phenotype. Using state-of-the-art tissue engineering techniques and cell biological approaches in combination with modern electrophysiological methods, you will work with single cells and multi-cellular preparations and assess the influence of changes in the local cellular environment on cardiomyocyte micro-architecture. This project demands a large spectrum of different methodological approaches involving special cell and tissue culture techniques and microscopy (live cell imaging, SEM and TEM), molecular biology and protein biochemistry, and cardiac-specific electrophysiological methods. Team: You will join a newly established junior research group lead by Dr. Nina Ullrich (http://www.physio.unibe.ch/~ullrich/group/), which is part of a dynamic team of young scientists and strong experts in the field of cardiovascular science. Dr. Ullrich is specialized in cardiac electrophysiology and modern live-cell imaging techniques, and she is well connected with international groups working in stem cell and cardiovascular research. Requirements: You should have obtained your PhD in cell biology, molecular biology, physiology or a related discipline. Solid experience in molecular biology is a big asset. Additional experience in imaging techniques and/or stem cell biology is welcome but not a requirement. You should bring strong motivation and the willingness to acquire new techniques.
