The Informatics Institute (IvI) is one of the eight research institutes of the Faculty of Science. The IvI covers a wide range of subjects, in both fundamental and applied research. The System and Network Engineering (SNE) group researches cross-domain interaction between Grid resource providers, optical and hybrid networking, resource descriptions using semantic web and programmable networks for the Future Internet. In collaboration with SURFnet and SURFsara, UvA has capabilities to access high-speed optical test bed installations in the optical photonic backbone of SURFnet in the Netherlands and internationally in the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF). Project Description The SNE group has an opening for a postdoc position in the COMMIT project for the duration of two years. COMMIT is a large Dutch project devoted to research in information and communication science. Our research in COMMIT is carried within the context of the P20 project. We delve into the performance, scalability and energy-efficiency issues of emerging virtualized infrastructures, with a focus on the integration of networking and computing elements. The SNE group has developed an integrated Semantic Web ontology (INDL) to describe such infrastructures. The availability of shared models is a prerequisite to tightly couple application demands and infrastructure capabilities. The SNE group is also one of the major contributors to the OGF standards NML and NSI. Both standards provide the basis for integrated networking and computing services. Tasks The selection of appropriate resources to deliver the envisioned services is an essential component in virtual infrastructures. The postdoctoral researcher will investigate the scalability and interoperability issues in semantic based resource selection for cloud provisioning. He/she will also research the usability of the model for content-aware and data-centric network applications. This is in line with the emerging trend of BigData processing in clouds. Here the challenge is the lifecycle of data processing stages and the optimal resource selection procedures. The postdoctoral researcher will use the existing model (INDL) developed so far in COMMIT and expand the toolset that leverages the model to further integrated with other components in P20. Benefits
