A postdoctoral position of one year – with the possibility of one year extension – is vacant as of 1 January 2014 at the Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO) at Aarhus University, Denmark.

Research area and project description
The ability to engineer tissues and organs as replacements for allografts and xenografts is an ongoing pursuit in regenerative medicine. The significance of the overall fibrillar and porous nanoscale topography of the ECM in promoting essential cellular processes has led tissue engineers to replace macroporous scaffolds with biomimetic materials with nanofibrous features. A unique technique that has gained tremendous attention in the last decade as the most robust, straightforward nanofibre processing method is electrospinning.

The project, Electrospun Biomimetic Nanofibres as Regenerative Medicines (ELECTROMED), is part of a large research program at the iNANO Center aimed at developing novel electrospun biomimetic nanofibres for the next generation of biomedical implants and devices.

The successful candidate will be involved in intensive interdisciplinary collaborations working on material developement, drug delivery strategy and in vivo animal studies. He/she will focus primarily on nerve and connective tissue engineering strategies and perform associated in vitro cell biology studies.

Qualifications and specific competences
We are seeking candidates with a background in cell biology, biomaterials, stem cell biology, tissue engineering or related disciplines. The applicant should have a working knowledge with experience in standard cell culture procedures for evaluating in vitro cell proliferation, differentiation and cell viability. Favored analytical skills involve use of different quantitative assays such as MTS (MTT or XTT), DNA and collagen quantifications, PCR, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, optical microscopy, confocal microscopy and electron microscopy. A strong background in in vitro evaluation of scaffolds is desired.

The Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO) (www.inano.au.dk) is a major research and education center based at Aarhus University. The center currently undertakes interdisciplinary research involving scientists from relevant areas in physics, chemistry, molecular biology, biology, engineering, and medicine. iNANO offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment with many industrial, national and international collaborators.
