Applications are sought for two Postdoctoral positions to join a team investigating the advancement of RETARGETED ONCOLYTIC HERPESVIRUSES (HSVs) as cancer-specific therapeutic tools.
The research will be based in the Laboratory of Molecular Virology in the Department of Experimental Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine, University of Bologna and will be led by Prof. Dr. Gabriella Campadelli-Fiume, who has pioneered the design of fully retargeted oncolytic herpes simplex viruses (oHSVs), which specifically infect and kill cancer cells. The project is supported by an Advanced ERC grant and the major goal will be to develop the retargeted oHSVs towards the clinic. The researchers will engineer non-cancer cell lines and oHSV for the production of clinical grade virus and develop suitable strategies for their systemic delivery and for boosting anti-tumor immunity. The prototype retargeted oHSV, developed in the laboratory, targets the HER2 receptor and ablates human breast and ovarian cancers in animal models. Further studies will be aimed at expanding the oncolytic HSV platform to target glioblastomas, prostate, head-and-neck and colon carcinomas.
Envisioned starting date: March, 2014 or later.
Essential requirements for the posts include a PhD degree and an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject. Experience in genetic engineering of large viruses, in molecular biology and molecular virology techniques, tissue and virus culture, is essential. Previous experience in a related research area would be advantageous. A demonstrated ability to communicate well, work within a team and maintain good laboratory records are also essential.
