Karolinska Institutet, Unit of Clinical Epidemiology
The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several units that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.
Internationally, the Nordic countries have been known as a "goldmine" for epidemiological research, particularly due to our systems of individually unique personal registration numbers, access to national demographic and health registries, and health care, predominantly funded by public sources, of high and uniform quality. Karolinska Institutet's vision is to further develop and integrate the unique resources for epidemiological research in Sweden such as biobanks, longitudinal cohorts, and newly available data sources such as computerized patient systems, the multigeneration- and prescription registries and quality of care registries. The Strategic Research Program in Epidemiology has three themes of research: i) Human Interactions with Microorganisms; ii) Molecular, Genetic and Clinical Epidemiology; and iii) Lifespan approach to Health and Disease.

Duties
Inflammatory disease epidemiology focuses on factors influencing risk and outcome of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. This position will have a particular focus on the interplay between inflammation/immune modulation and cancer risk and outcome. This expanding area of research promises to increase both our understanding of the role of immune-competence on the occurrence of autoimmune inflammatory diseases and our clinical ability to optimize prevention, treatment, and risk communication, with a specific focus on cancer.
The proposed projects represent a collaboration between the chronic inflammatory disease and the cancer epidemiology research groups at the Clincial Epidemiology Unit, and will be based on the extraordinary data sources available on inflammatory diseases and malignancies, and the possibility to link together information from these and from other Swedish nation-wide and population-based healthcare registers. The two groups consist of about 10 researchers each (at senior and junior levels), with broad national and international collaborative networks. The proposed projects form part of larger research programmes in this area, coordinated by the group leaders (below). The research work will include studies of hereditary/genetic, clinical and environmental factors associated with chronic inflammation, immune-suppression and cancer. Specific questions to be addressed include risk of de novo development of auto-immune/inflammatory disorders following organ transplantation, and hereditary and genetic determinants for chronic inflammation and cancer risk and outcome.

Entry requirements
Knowledge of epidemiologic study designs/methods, analytic and programming skills are prerequisites. Previous research within inflammatory or cancer epidemiology is a strong merit. Likewise, clinical work within the fields of rheumatology and/or oncology/hematology is meritorious. It is assumed that the applicant is fluent in English, spoken and written.

A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.
