IRC133313: Training Fellowship (Postdoctoral Research Scientist)
Salary £26,545 – £29,274 per annum – MRC Band 4a
Full Time – Fixed Term position / 3 years

We are seeking a postdoctoral research scientist to join the Cilia Development and Disease group at the Mammalian Genetics Unit (MGU), MRC Harwell.

Applications are invited for a 3 year postdoctoral position to join a team investigating the role of cilia in development and disease. We recently established a role for Pkd1l1, in combination with Pkd2, in normal left-right (L-R) patterning (Field et al, 2011). You will further investigate the role of cilia, PKD-family proteins and flow in development and disease.

The importance of cilia in biological processes has become increasingly evident in the past few years. Specialised motile cilia function in the trachea, ependyma of the brain and the reproductive tract; during development cilia are also required for establishing left-right patterning. In contrast, non-motile primary cilia have been implicated in cell-cell signalling (particularly the hedgehog pathway), planar cell polarity, stress perception, hearing, vision and obesity leading some to describe them as the cellular antenna.

You will join an established team investigating the role of cilia in development and disease, concentrating particularly on the role of PKD1L1, PKD2 and cilia in L-R patterning, and the role fluid flow in development and disease.

To join us you will need:

• A PhD in a biological science and have training in all basic molecular biology techniques.
• Experience in cilia biology, cell biology, gene expression analysis and/or biochemistry would be an advantage.
• Experience in basic molecular biology.
