Bacterial Regulation of Host Metabolic Health and Lifespan

Full Time: The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £32,699 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
A post-doctoral position is available in the Cabreiro group (www.ismb.lon.ac.uk/filipe_cabreiro.html ) to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying bacterial regulation of host metabolism and lifespan. Using C. elegans as a model organism, we are currently investigating how drugs commonly used to treat human disease affect bacterial metabolism, and how this in turn interferes with host physiology. Our goals are: firstly, to investigate the importance of bacterial metabolism in host physiology and pathology; and secondly, to develop novel molecular tools to probe these processes in vivo.
The project is multidisciplinary, combining molecular biology, microbiology and biochemistry to develop new strategies aimed at improving host metabolic health. The work will be undertaken at the Research Department of Structural and Molecular Biology at UCL, which together with Birkbeck College, forms part of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology.
Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6b (salary £28,621 - £30,180 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
The post is funded by a Wellcome Trust/Royal Society grant for 3 years in the first instance.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated scientist, capable of working independently as well as in small collaborative groups. Applicants must have (or be about to complete) a PhD in a relevant subject area and have experience in assay or method development. Candidates must have excellent problem solving skills and to be able to creatively tackle scientific questions.
