A Post-Doctoral Research Position in neuronal electrophysiology is currently available in the Laboratory of Dr. Steven Laviolette, Depts. Of Anatomy & Cell Biology and Psychiatry, at the University of Western Ontario, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Our laboratory uses an integrative combination of neuroscience research techniques, including molecular biology, behavioural pharmacology, in vivo single unit and multi-unit neuronal recordings during behavioural conditioning and measures of synaptic plasticity related to learning and memory, such as long term potentiation. We are currently examining the underlying neurobiological basis of nicotine and opiate addiction, examining how functional interactions and neuronal plasticity within the mesocorticolimbic system controls the addictive properties of these drugs (see J. Neurosci.28:8025-33; PNAS, 109(8):3101-6; J. Neurosci. 31(31):11172-83). In addition, we are exploring how cannabinoid signaling within the mammalian brain controls the encoding and processing of emotionally salient information and how disturbances in these pathways may lead to neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and PTSD (see J. Neurosci. 31(14):5300-12; Cerebral Cortex, 20(6):1486-96).
A background in neuronal electrophysiological recording techniques (either in vitro or in vivo) is required for this position. Experience with behavioural pharmacology (stereotaxic surgery, behavioural conditioning procedures) would be a strong asset.
