Brunel Institute of Power Systems – Electronic and Computer Engineering                 

A post-doctoral Research Fellow/Research Assistant position is available on the EPSRC funded Developing Scalable Smart Grid Infrastructure to Enable Secure Transmission System Control project. The research position is for 18 months and starts from 1st September 2014. The research project involves 3 UK industry partners; National Grid, Alstom and Intel. The project is a collaborative UK-China Smart Grid project and is led by Brunel University in the UK. The successful applicant will receive additional funding for research visits to the following collaborative partners in China; Tsinghua University, Sichuan University and CEPRI. The researcher will also visit the National Grid, Wokingham and will investigate: scalable smart grid infrastructure to enable secure and reliable transmission system operation and control. The College is one of the largest and most successful in the UK and was rated 5 in the 2001 RAE and achieved excellent results in the 2008 RAE in both its General Engineering and Mechanical Engineering submissions. The General Engineering submission to RAE2008 (UoA 25) ranked 5th in UK in terms of research power. The new appointment will be associated with the internationally recognised Brunel Institute of Power Systems (BIPS).

The successful candidate is expected to hold a PhD in an appropriate area of research and to have expertise in one or more of the following areas: power systems operation and control, power system analysis, power system stability, wide area monitoring systems, high performance information and communications technologies or other closely related areas. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and be a highly collaborative researcher. Strong communication/interpersonal skill and an ability to work independently are essential. Outstanding candidates without a PhD, but having directly relevant research or practical experience are also welcome to apply.
