We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow in statistical and computational genomics to work on large-scale exome sequencing analysis of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The successful applicant to this position would have the opportunity to work on:

Identification of ASD genes, including exome analysis, methods development and integration of ASD results with other published datasets on other neuropsychiatric traits (shown to have a high level of genetic overlap with ASD).

Participation in the related "Deciphering Developmental Disorders" project, coordinated at Sanger, using exome sequencing to study a broad range of severe childhood developmental disorders. Roughly 20% of these children also have autism, and may share important genetics with the broader ASD group.

Extensions of ASD genetic analysis via the broader Sanger pipelines, such as via collaborative analysis of mouse or cellular models of identified genes.

The position is in Dr. Jeffrey Barrett's team at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, and will be part of the Autism Sequencing Consortium, an international partnership to understand the genetics of ASD. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with genomic researchers at Sanger, and to collaborate with (and possibly visit) Professor Mark Daly's lab at the Mass. General Hospital/Broad Institute in Boston, MA.

We are looking for someone who enjoys scientific problem solving, has a strong background in statistical and computational genetics, and has a relevant PhD. The ideal candidate will have a strong publication record, experience handling large-scale genetic and genomic datasets, and an ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Essential Skills:

• Motivation and ambition to make a personal contribution to genomic research

• PhD in genetics, statistics or another quantitative subject，Statistical knowledge and analytical mind-set

• Experience with computer programming & scripting

• Previous experience with analysis of next-generation sequencing data and/or GWAS

• Ability to deliver excellent work according to agreed timelines
• Ability to work with others in a collegiate environment.

Ideal Skills:

• Experience with very large scale (multiple terabyte) computational analysis

• Interest and ability in public presentation of science

• Strong scientific publication record
• Experience and/or interest in ASD

Other information:

Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. Salary range is £29,829 to £37,393 per annum dependent on experience. Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £27,405pa. On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay scale above.
