The Divisions of Neurosurgery and Developmental Biology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to study respiratory circuits. Dr. Steven Crone's laboratory studies how neural circuits that control motor behaviors such as breathing and locomotion are affected by disease and injury. The goal of the Fellow's project will be to identify neurons important for accessory respiratory muscle recruitment in order to develop therapies to improve breathing and reduce ventilator dependence in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), or spinal cord injury. In order to accomplish this goal, the Crone lab uses a host of transgenic mouse lines and viral tools to examine the connectivity and alter the activity of neurons within motor circuits in animal disease models.

Experience handling and performing surgical procedures on rodents (stereotaxic surgery), and interpreting physiological (EMG, Plethysmography) and anatomical experiments is preferred but not required. Candidates with prior experience performing respiratory physiology, retrograde or anterograde tracing experiments, and/or performing surgical procedures on mice are encouraged to apply.
