Large objects, consisting of trillions of atoms, should adhere to the laws of quantum mechanics just like single atoms, photons, etc. One of the consequences is that they exhibit quantum motion – at the scale of femtometers for a typical nanomechanical oscillator. This scale also sets the fundamental limit to the precision of a position measurement. In this project, you will use advanced optical techniques to perform measurements at this limit, and even break it. In doing so, we will in fact gain control over the quantum state of motion of the object. For this purpose, we develop novel nanophotonic structures that show very strong coupling between light and mechanical motion, and study entirely new ways to couple light to and from the systems. You will take a leading role in a small team to establish such quantum measurement and control of a nanomechanical oscillator, and be involved in all aspects of design, realization, and cryogenic optical measurements in order to demonstrate new ways to manipulate the quantum state of large objects. Research In this project, we will use advanced nanophotonic systems to perform quantum measurements on the position of nanomechanical oscillators. Through such measurements, we seek to control the quantum state of a 'macroscopic' object.
Description
FOM prefers candidates who have qualifying experience (e.g. as PhD student or postdoctoral researcher) in a scientific research institute abroad. We seek an excellent candidate with a background in physics who meets the requirements for a doctors-degree. Candidates with experience in quantum optics, AMO and/or low-temperature physics are especially encouraged to apply. The position is intended as full-time (forty hours per week, 12 months per year) appointment in the service of Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) for the duration of two years. AMOLF assists any new postdoc with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs.Benefits
You will be employed by the FOM-foundation for a fixed period of two years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 3,804 euro gross per month, depending on your level of experience. The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8 percent and an end-of-year bonus of 8.33 percent.
