The newly-installed German Research Association (DFG) Research Unit on Data Assimilation for Improved Characterization of Fluxes across Compartmental Interfaces (FOR2131) accepts applications for a PostDoctoral position at the Meteorological Institute of the University of Bonn for initially 3 years starting at the earliest possible date. The place of work will be the Forschungszentrum Jülich (http://www.hpsc-terrsys.de/).

The Research Unit FOR2131 sets out to design and install a data assimilation framework for catchment-scale terrestrial systems encompassing all compartments from the groundwater to the atmosphere including soil, vegetation, and river networks. Observations to be assimilated into a physically-based simulation platform of the terrestrial system encompass groundwater levels, in-situ soil moisture, river levels and discharge, turbulent fluxes and other micrometeorological observations, in-situ and radar-based precipitation, and brightness temperatures from satellites, amongst others.

We are seeking a Computer Scientist with a degree in computer science, informatics or any related field with a strong emphasis on scientific code development to be hired within the Central Project C1 of the research unit. Applicants with backgrounds in computational geosciences, boundary-layer meteorology, geostatistics, hydrometeorology, hydrology and hydrogeology will also be considered if they have a proven and strong experience in scientific code development and High Performance Computing. 
The main role of the postdoc is to contribute to the development and advancement of the existing state-of-the-art coupled modelling platform TerrSysMP. In collaboration with other members in the research unit, the modelling platform will be used to create a complete model of a hydrologic catchment, closing the terrestrial water and energy cycles from bedrock into the atmosphere. The output is needed by the individual subprojects in the research unit and forms the basis for the extraction of virtual measurements at different spatial and temporal scales and from different parts of the water and energy cycle. The planned simulations will be at the cutting edge of today’s modelling capabilities in terms of both spatial and temporal resolution. The simulations will be performed on one of the most powerful computer systems in Europe, the BlueGene/Q JUQUEEN supercomputer at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) in Germany in close collaboration with the Centre for High-Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems. The work will lead to peer-reviewed journal publications with significant scientific and technical impact in multiple disciplines. 
Documented experience in parallel programming in C/C++ and/or Fortran is a requirement. It is expected that the postdoc closely cooperates with other scientists in the Research Unit and international research groups.
