Postdoctoral Research Associate in Cell Cycle Modeling : Blacksburg, VA, United States

We are searching for a postdoctoral associate with experience in mathematical modeling to join a team exploring the molecular basis of cell cycle checkpoints in budding yeast. The team consists of molecular biologists, bioinformatics specialists, and mathematical modelers at Virginia Tech and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute. The emphasis of this position will be on stochastic modeling of the spindle assembly checkpoint and the DNA damage checkpoint in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The research will be done in collaboration with Drs. John Tyson, Jean Peccoud and Neil Adames on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA.

Responsibilities:
The postdoctoral associate’s primary responsibility will be to construct, analyze, simulate and optimize models of cell cycle checkpoints based on elementary reaction networks suitable for investigation by Gillespie’s stochastic simulation algorithm. Success will require close attention to experimental data from our collaborators and the literature, expertise in building realistic models using chemical rate equations, familiarity with nonlinear dynamical systems theory and stochastic simulations, and facility using software tools for bifurcation analysis and parameter estimation.
The postdoctoral associate will be expected to participate in lab meetings, to interact productively with graduate and undergraduate students under the advisement of Dr. Tyson, and to help train, guide and mentor these students. The postdoctoral associate will also be expected to make presentations regarding his/her research, to publish the original results of research in peer-reviewed high-impact scientific journals, and to participate in grant proposal preparation.

Qualifications:
The postdoctoral associate shall have a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline (applied mathematics, biophysical chemistry, biomedical engineering or molecular cell biology) and peer-reviewed publications in respected journals. A strong background in mathematical modeling is required, as are good interpersonal and communication skills, effective work habits, and the ability to work as part of a team. A genuine interest in computational cell biology is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge and experience in the areas of cell-cycle regulation, dynamical systems theory, computer programming, bifurcation theory and parameter optimization.
