Division of Molecular Toxicology
The Division of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine coordinates a translational (i.e., pre-clinical and clinical) project on the molecular etiology and pathogenesis of severe congenital neutropenia, or Kostmann disease, in close collaboration with colleagues at the Karolinska University Hospital, and our research has contributed to the elucidation of novel gene defects. The research is funded by the Swedish Cancer Foundation and Stockholm County Council. Kostmann disease is characterized by reduced neutrophil counts and recurrent bacterial infections, with excessive apoptosis of myeloid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. These patients are also at risk of developing secondary malignancies, presumably due to the acquisition of additional genetic defects during the course of the disease.
