Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Associate Translational Science inAAV Gene Therapy and Analgesic Drug Development — Focus on Clinical Product Development with Entrepreneurial Career Options

A position in the field of translational research on adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy for pain is available for a highly enthusiastic postdoctoral fellow or research associate. The host laboratory (PI Beutler, co-PI Maus) has been NIH funded for >10 years for the development of analgesic AAV vectors. We have recently transitioned from basic studies in rodents to testing of clinically applicable pain treatment strategies in large animal models with a very strong emphasis on the use of sophisticated image-guided gene vector delivery to the spinal compartment in swine (using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging). New funding dedicated to a 3-year preclinical product development phase was recently approved. Studies will aim at the generation of an IND-approved vector for future testing in a clinical trial. Research- and development activities will initially be based in the academic laboratory with the anticipated start-up of a biotechnology company to serve as private partner. The postdoctoral/research associate position will be in the academic environment with the potential of partaking in scientifically related entrepreneurial activities.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. or equivalent and extensive laboratory-based training with comprehensive experience and a very solid background in molecular techniques (DNA, RNA, protein, tissue, tissue culture; analytical and preparatory techniques). Experience in the biology of AAV vectors would be helpful but is not an absolute requirement.

Candidates interested in gene therapy-based drug development, pre-clinical toxicology, the regulatory approval process for investigational new drugs (IND) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and in pursuing a future career in the biotechnology- or pharmaceutical field or in becoming a biotech entrepreneur are especially encouraged to apply.
