Objective: Applying and developing image enhancement methods for medical images.
This position will focus on the applying existing and developing new image enhancement methods for medical images for the three different modalities (capsule video endoscopy, video guided surgery and skin imaging). We will target challenging issues in digital medical imaging. Removing noise in digital medical images remains as one of the major challenges in medical imaging. The presence of noise will degrade the quality of the images, and can conceal important image details, thus affecting the subsequent image segmentation, feature extraction and recognition, quantitative analysis, and most importantly the diagnosis. Another key aspect in medical imaging is contrast enhancement, since enhancing contrast is crucial for identifying important structures. However, contrast enhancement is typically done at the expense of noise amplification. Blurriness (low sharpness) is also a challenging issue that will be given attention. A sharper image appearance will result in better detection and extraction of information. The removal of artifacts is important, since artifacts can obscure underlying tissue. Color inconsistency is also a major issue in for example video endoscopy, and can be improved through color characterization and calibration.
