Postdoctoral position in Immunology of HIV-1 and Cancer.
University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, USA
A Postdoctoral position is available immediately in the fascinating field of immunology of HIV-1 and cancer in the research group of Dr. Zdenek Hel, Department of Pathology, Department of Microbiology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama, USA. UAB ranked 10th among US public universities in total NIH funding in 2015 and its Department of Pathology consistently ranks among the best in the country.
The major focus of the laboratory of Dr. Hel is to understand the role of neutrophils and other innate immune cell populations in the regulation of immune responses in chronic infections, cancer, and autoimmune diseases. Neutrophils, the largest circulating immune cell population in the body, have been traditionally recognized as essential innate immune effector cells. However, this view is significantly changing due to recently accumulated evidence that highlights the role played by neutrophils in the regulation of function of other cell types including T cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), chromatin-based structures extruded from neutrophils upon activation, mediate the development of cardiovascular disease, vasculitis, and stroke. We address the role of neutrophils and NETs in multiple disorders including HIV-1 infection, cancer, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, combined deficiency, cardiovascular disease, decreased responsiveness to immunization, and other.
The laboratory has several NIH-funded projects. Approaches of studies include immunology, molecular biology, protein analyses, flow cytometry, high throughput gene expression analyses, microbiome, clinical research/trials, targeted therapies, and studies in pre-clinical mouse models. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. Priority will be given to qualified candidates with a strong background in cell culture, immunology, and molecular biology. The candidate will be expected to write and think independently with passion for innovative research. He/she should be able to analyse data and write manuscripts. Competitive applicants should have a proven track record with publications. Competitive salary (with benefits) will followNIH guidelines commensurate with training and experience.
