  We seek an open-minded Postdoc with broad experience in developing and testing drug delivery strategies for brain diseases. Drug delivery to the brain remains a tremendous challenge for treating the diseases that develop in an aging population. The drugs that have the potential to limit the consequences of these diseases are characterized by a large size, and therefore, with no capacity for transporting across the blood-brain barrier. Many strategies to transport these large molecules into the brain have been tested, but at this point, no successful strategies have shown clinical benefits for the patients. In this project, we intend to develop nanomedicine strategies to bind the blood-brain barrier and transport neuroactive drugs into the brain tissue.

  The research is within design and production of varying types of targeted nanoparticles. In this case, the nanoparticles are functionalized with different peptides or proteins that are able to bind to receptors expressed on the luminal surface of the blood-brain barrier. There is a strong focus both on state-of-the-art high-sensitivity quantification techniques, as well as morphological and functional assessment of the nanoparticle transport. The research is cross-disciplinary and involves interaction with researchers having expertise in synthetic chemistry, nanoparticle formulation, and in vitro/in vivo assessment of nanoparticle behavior.

  Responsibilities and tasks

  We seek a candidate that has a broad background in nanoparticle production and testing in in vivo systems. A strong background in neuroanatomy and neuromalignant diseases is also preferred. The research will be to create novel strategies for transporting nanoparticles into the brain. We aim to validate the system both in vitro and in vivo, and we intend to introduce animal models at a very early timepoint. Based on your interests and network, other types drug delivery strategies may be employed as well.

  You will be responsible for testing novel brain drug delivery systems in large-scale in vivo studies, as well as making mechanistic studies in vitro, and explore the limits and possibilities of these brain drug delivery systems in the treatment of diseases, e.g. brain cancer. Depending on the candidate profile, it is also possible to be involved designing and producing the drug delivery systems in collaboration with synthetic chemists and formulation specialists.

  You will have the opportunity to guide Master students and to teach at practical courses.

  The project will mostly be done at DTU Nanotech in the group of Thomas L. Andresen. Since the project is a part of the Lundbeck Foundation Research Initiative on Brain Barriers and Drug Delivery, collaborative projects with participants from other Danish universities. We encourage the postdoc to reach out to these collaborators to improve the resulting research.

  Qualifications

  Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

  As the field is cross disciplinary, we may accept candidates from many fields but preferably the candidate has a PhD in the field on brain drug delivery, where the PhD project included usage or development nanomedicines. FELASA-accredited certificate in Laboratory Animal Science is a requirement.

  You must be highly motivated for developing new drug delivery strategies for treating severe neurological diseases.

  The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
